Baby It's Cold Out There

* For the best viewing click on the photos to enlarge them*

The New Year came in with a cold snap and the highs today have hovered around 30. The hubby and I were both lucky enough to be off today and we took advantage of it by sleeping in. I got up around 10 cooked some breakfast (another rare treat) and we sat around being lazy and watched TWO movies before finally getting up in the early afternoon and taking a drive. I wanted to get a head start on a new photo project. If you read my post from a few days ago then you know I plan on taking photos from around my area and posting them at lest once a month. I am calling this project "The World Around Me" I want to start it off by showing you some of the Mariners Museum park. This park is 550 acres of wooded land which includes trails and a 167 acre lake called Lake Maury. There is a five mile trail which has fourteen bridges along with picnic areas. It was to cold to go on the trail today but we did visit

The famous Lion’s Bridge. This bridge sits on top of a dam and from here you get wonderful views of the James River.

If you look closely you can see FOUR lions on the bridge.

This is a close up of two of them (one on either side of the bridge)

The parking area leads up to the Noland Trail and another statue. This is called "Conquering the Wild" by Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington. She was a famous American Sculptor and because of her husband's enormous wealth and the shared interests of the couple, the Huntington's were responsible for founding fourteen museums and four wild life preserves.

It was to cold to do much more than take a few photos, but I did walk around the water a bit and watched the ducks

I don't know how they stand to swim around in the cold water the way they do..
These seagulls seemed to be a little bit smarter and at lest huddled together to stay warm

One little brave guy let me get close before they took off in flight

I took a few more random shots before jumping into the car and heading to the local 7-11 and a cup of hot chocolate...

So how did you spend your New Years Day?

Lovely series of photos! I really liked those lion statues. And there's always something about seeing ducks swim around in the water that makes me smile!
I spent today still resting & recovering from that awful flu I had. But tomorrow we have a family reunion party to go to so looking forward to that.
Happy New Year!

A five-mile trail with fourteen bridges? How cool is that! We have nothing like that around here in Connecticut - at least not that I am aware of or in close driving distance!

It was most definitely cold with a capital "C" out there today. I spent most of my day sitting in dispatch and looking out at the ice that was forming in the marina across from the building I work in. It just looked horribly cold out there!

Looking forward to even more pictures of your area, though I hope it's a bit warmer for you the next time you head out!

Thanks for the tour - it was lovely. And no snow! It must be heaven. If I went with you I'd probably be saying, "It's not cold - it's nice out!"

This was nice nice. I like that you live in the older part of the US. You don't see neat stuff here like statues. I'm going to try to get out more and take photos.

I'd heard of Lion's Bridge but never seen pictures so how interesting to finally see what it looks like. Love those lion statues!! I often wonder how birds and animals stay warm during the cold weather...looking at the seagull's tiny feet you'd think they'd freeze right up! lol Beautiful pictures as always. xoxo

I love that you watched two movies before doing anything, that's my kind of morning! My hubby and I are the same way but we still love to go out later in the day. We are not morning people.

What a fantastic outing and that last image of that tree warms my heart! Even on such a cold day.
