It was a different world

I had been running errands this morning and was returning home when I heard this news Gunman Kills 32 in Virginia Tech Rampage

Of course being a typical blogger I knew I would probably mention it. What I didn't know was what to say about how it affected me.
For the life of me I just don't understand when this type of thing happens. What is wrong with people that makes them so sick that they can just kill innocent people?
As a mother and a grandmother I can not imagine the horror of sending my child off to school only to have them never return. Granted these are collage students and not young children, but when violence of this kind strikes, age is no factor.
Here were a group of people, in a class room trying to better themselves so that they can survive in this world and one sick crazed person walks in and kills them. What a waste of life. What will the world miss by not having these people in it? What if one of them would have been President someday. Or find the cure for cancer. I suppose like all the other senseless shootings we have had to face in our country we will never know. When will the violence stop? Can we do anything to control it? Will we reach a point where we can't go out of our house for fear of being murdered. My god these were students sitting in a class room. I must be getting old because I just don't get it. When I was young you never heard of this happening. I was thinking all these thought as I was driving home. I had the radio on and this is the song that came on. Maybe this sums it up.

A Different World

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead-based paint
No childproof lids
No seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets
and still here we are
Still here we are

We got daddy's belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside
Playin' outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same everyday
the pledge of allegiance, then someone would pray
not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed but that was alright

We turned out alright

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

No bottled water
We'd drink from a garden hose
And every Sunday,
All the stores were closed.

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

I've got 4 blogger friends in your area and it just gets me really down. I'm sorry this happened.

I also thought of you right away when I heard the news! My heart goes out to the families. It's an awful world we live in that we can't even be safe in our own schools anymore.

Yes, the world's a scary place. So much has changed since our children were young - and much of it not in a good way. And I loved the poem. When my daughter gets frantic about every little thing she does with her kids and worries about "traumatizing" them, I remind her about all the mistakes I must have made and how incredible she turned out!

I, too, worry about my child - I worry about all children.
We have become so closed off from one another, it seems we only know how to fear.
I am glad you and your loved ones are safe.
