Catching up

Sorry to cut the previous post short. I had it in drafts thinking I would finish it and post it, but time got away from me. I spent almost all of my day yesterday spring cleaning. My daughter (who cleans houses for a living) came by to help me and believe me she worked me hard lol. She even took everything out of the kitchen cabinets and washed it all and put it back. I don't know where she gets this from, but it isn't me, I am a lick and a promise kind of gal. Anyway that took up my day and I kept my grandson for her last night until almost midnight so she could work her second job, so the blog was neglected. The thoughts I had on the tour of Ft. Monroe were lost and now it is time for me to head out to work. Instead of filling your minds wiht words I will leave you with some more photos..Enjoy you day

Photo Hunt-Hanging

I haven't play along with PhotoHunt in a long time, but I knew when I saw the theme for this week was hanging I knew the perfect photo.

These hams are "hanging" in the smoke house at Sherwood Forest Plantation which was the home of the 10th US President John Tyler.

Ok I admit it, I am a sucker when it comes to cats. I can't imagine anyone not loving them (Yes I know some of you hate cats). They are sweet and soft and pretty much take care of themselves. I would be lost without my babies, and my love for animals has passed on to my daughter. She adopted a kitty of her own a few months ago, and just couldn't stand the idea that her dad (my ex) did not have a cat. His died last fall, and she has secretly been thinking of replacing it for months. He had a birthday yesterday, so she started a few weeks ago looking around for a kitten. You would think that a kitten would be easy to find. Not so, at lest not in our area. She tired every pet store in town, No kittens, she called the local shelters, no kittens. The newspaper was no help, and most of the rescue places were a bunch of nutty people who wanted her to fill out an application, have a home study and get references before they would even talk to her. Can you imagine needing a home study to adopt a CAT. I've seen people adopt babies easier than you can adopt a cat in this area. Maybe it is due to P*TA (insert the letter E where the * is) headquarters being here (and they are a bunch of fanatics)but a kitten was not to be found. Finally late yesterday afternoon she was able to find one up for sale by a private owner and today this sweet baby came home to live with her dad.





This is Chico. Weird name for a cat, but he named her for a prostitute he use to know in Japan when he was young (before he met me). Yep, don't laugh. It is true, that was her name. The kitten is half Siamese and half Persian, eight weeks old and soooo soft and fluffy. He fell in love with her the minute he saw her and when I left his house earlier tonight she was sound asleep in his arms...
All together now...AWWWWWWWW

Birthday photos

I'm not sure if you can tell but this is a opal and diamond bracelet. My husband gave it to me for my birthday. Opal is my birthstone and I really love them. Did you know it is bad luck to wear an opal unless it is your birthstone?



My daughter bought these lovely budda's for me. She knew I collected them and they make a lovely addition to my altar

Don't you just love this witch! Another gift from my daughter. I have never seen one like it and just fell in love when I saw it.

I thought about showing everyone my tattoo. I feel like it is a true work of ART.



Then I got to thinking maybe I should use a photo that shows a bit more culture. So I decided on this sculpture of the Three Muses that I took at Maymont in Richmond VA.

But then I thought not everyone might not enjoy seeing naked ladies. So I finally settled on this,

It is the picture that hangs in my daughters living room. Everyone loves Elephants don't they?

You are looking at the COLORFUL ceiling of Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Newport News, Virginia. I took this photo last year when I attended the Greek Fest. It is held every year around Memorial Day. This year it will be May 31 to June 3, 2007. Admission is free and there is always good food. lots of fun and crafts and a good time for everyone. I should be home from my vacation just in time to attend.

Five (Photo Hunt)

FIVE


This weeks theme is FIVE and I wanted to share five of my little troll friends with you. I got my first troll when I was about 10. I can remember holding it in my hands and rubbing the hair for good luck. I'm sure I made plenty of wishes on it even though I don't remember any of them now. Somewhere over the years the troll disapeared and it wasn't given any more thought until I had children of my own. Once again the little trolls came to live at my house. Awe but once again children grow up and the little trolls found there way to the give away bins when old toys were sorted out. A couple of years ago, while shopping in a thrift store I ran across a troll. Ohhh I thought I want that, so in the basket he went. I knew my grandson will want to play with them someday. I now have about 10 or 12 of the little guys.

Photo-Hunt Childhood

The theme this week is CHILDHOOD and I thought about using a photo of my kids or grandkids. Instead I found this one of ME!. I remember this lazy summer day. I was 9 and living in Georgia. My dad was in the Navy and stationed in Hawaii at the time. Mom had gone home to her family with us kids. A few months later President John F. Kennedy was shot, we practiced air raid drills at school and life slowly changed. Aww the innocence of childhood.

Photo Hunt: RARE

This weeks theme is Rare and I have to admit my first thought was a big juicy steak. The problem was I didn't have any steaks in the freezer and I couldn't think of anything else to use for a photo until the other day when my husband and I took a trip to Historic Jamestown Virginia.

In my post on April 26 I shared some photos and talked a little about my trip to Jamestown. I told my readers that I had some more photos to share but would not post them until today because what I photographed was RARE.

I think they are because we arrived on a day when ABC News was there doing a document for the 400th anniversary that is coming up on May 13, 2007.

We got there just in time to see some of the interviews that were going on.


Jamestown is located on the banks of the beautiful James River and you can tell that one of the camera men was enjoying the day.



We were lucky enough to witness some of the excavations of a new area. They were not sure at the time of the photos if they were digging an old well, but old wells are where most of the artifacts of that time period have been found. They did know that they had found something and we got to watch! It is very delicate work to sift through the layers of dirt in hopes of finding a RARE piece from the original settlement.







First the dirt was put into buckets where it was tagged


Then they are taken to a special area where it is placed a little bit at a time on a screen and washed.



If they find something it is set aside
Depending on what they find some pieces will be taken to another area and cleaned again then later placed in the museum here on the island.

As you can see from the following photos, several pieces of old pottery were found. Just look at that beautiful shade of green. It is hard to imagine this piece is probably 400 years old.

Can you see the tiny beads in the tray? They would have been used for trading with the Indians in the area.

There are some old nails there too. Do you see the bone?

Just take a look at this.

It is an old lock from a ship..What a RARE find!!
